Community Classes

BCMT is pleased to offer courses to the general public. Our community courses cover everything from broad-brush explanations and practice of hands-on techniques to intensive science-based classes in anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.

Community student enrollment is based on space availability. Once availability is confirmed, payment in full will be accepted and processed. All texts and supplies are available in our Wellness Bookstore, and may be purchased the day of class, or anytime prior.

One-Day Courses:
Foot Reflexology
This course will introduce you to the theory of zone therapy and the locations of the reflex points that correspond to organs, glands, and other body parts. You will observe demonstrations of basic therapeutic techniques and practice them with your classmates. At the end of the course, you will have an awareness of how reflexology can help health problems and will feel comfortable in offering foot reflexology to your friends and family.

Natural Energy Flows
Learn how to give yourself an energetic tune-up! This course will teach an effective process to open energy flows, and assist the body to come into a state of harmony. Basic muscle testing will be taught, as well as how to re-set your energy flows. Techniques for centering, balancing brain hemispheres, opening the chakras, assisting meridian flows, and grounding will be shared. Life experience is determined by how you focus and flow your energy harmoniously; learn how in this "flow better to feel better" course.

Beginning Canine Massage
What to learn how to give back to your favorite canine companion? This course is for those with no previous massage experience and is geared toward canine owners. Basic Swedish massage strokes, brief anatomy, and a behavior overview are taught to help maintain the health and well-being of your canine. Dogs will be provided for hands-on experience and there will be a field trip to a doggie day care/hotel.

Introduction to Massage Therapy
This introductory course will teach you how to perform a full-body Swedish massage using the proper techniques. This course is perfect for individuals interested in exploring massage therapy as a profession or for couples who want to learn the finer points of massage as a way to keep their loved-ones happy and healthy.

Chi Kung Healing
Chi Kung (Chi=Energy, Kung=Cultivation) is an ancient healing practice dating back over 5000 years.  It is based on the Chinese Medicine principal that our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being is directly linked to how our energy or chi flows within our energy body. In this Chi Kung Healing class, you will learn both self-healing practices and meditations as well as  external chi healing which is treatment by you as a practitioner on another person.  You will also develop an understanding of the energy anatomy of the human being from the Chinese perspective. This class is designed for either the lay-person or seasoned practitioner who would like to add this ancient form of healing to their practice.

Healing Touch
The techniques taught in this course can assist clients in stress relief; acute and chronic pain management; the relaxation response; recovery from illness and surgery; elimination of toxins; self-care practice; and accelerated healing at physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Healing Touch International is a worldwide certification program for nurses, massage therapists, and all health care professionals. This course is the foundational course which enables students to continue on to subsequent levels of classes through Healing Touch International, leading to an international certification.

Canine Massage: A Preparatory Course for the Non-Professional
This module will prepare the non-professional for the more in-depth learning of the Canine Certificate Program by focusing on the anatomy, and physiology of the canine body as well as the canine skeletal and muscular structures. Canine behavior and communication within the species and with humans will be also explored, through classroom instruction in basic massage strokes and techniques, through hands-on work
with one another, and finally, through hands on work with a canine “client”. This course consists of 30 in-class hours and at least two hours of outside study. Completion of this intensive five day course with a passing grade of 80% or higher is a prerequisite for acceptance into the Canine Certificate Program.

10-Week Courses:
Anatomy & Physiology I
This course teaches students the basics of cellular tissue, and organ structure and function. Concepts of homeostasis, movement of molecules, and chemical reactions set the stage for a thorough understanding of the body systems studied in this course and its second quarter equivalent. Students study the role of nutritional chemistry in physiology and disease, and learn to evaluate situations they may encounter in their practice of massage therapy. In addition students learn to analyze their diets, evaluate areas that can be improved, and create strategies for dietary change.

Anatomy & Physiology II
This course is a continuation of Anatomy & Physiology I. Emphasis is placed on the muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and lymphatic systems. Students study the healthy bone structure and function. This knowledge lays the foundation for recognizing anatomical and physiological disorders requiring treatment.

Anatomiken I - The Zoologik System
This course is the study of human muscle and skeletal anatomy using traditional means combined with the act of forming clay anatomy and positioning it in a precise, specially made skeletal model - ManikenT. Using clay, students build muscles and other soft tissue structures, revealing their logic, form, and function. This process of building the body from the inside out assists students in retaining the knowledge their hands have practiced. There is an emphasis in this course on the muscles that are clinically relevant to massage therapy.

Anatomiken II -The Zoologik System
This course is a continuation of Anatomiken I. The kinesthetic aspect of the system comes from the fact that "kinesis" means motion. "Kinesthetic" refers to the body's sense of itself in motion, and covers fundamental aspects of muscle action. This system of hands-on learning is an ideal, kinesthetic approach to the study of musculoskeletal system, building the body from the inside out. In addition, students study the location; structure; functions; pathological considerations; and interrelationships of joints, muscle groups, ligaments, and connective tissue.

Pathophysiology
This course introduces students to alterations in normal human physiology, which results in disease. Students gain an understanding of how and why the normal homeostatic balance is disrupted. They also learn how to recognize common diseases they may encounter in their massage therapy practices. Students will learn about musculoskeletal disorders, common cancers, skin disorders, infectious diseases, cardiovascular disease, and endocrine/metabolic disorders.

Community Classes Requiring Some Massage Experience
Creative Support for Laboring Women
Using massage therapy for pain management has become a popular and effective choice for laboring women, and many therapists are being asked to attend births for their nurturing support. This module explores using intuitive touch and specific techniques and positions that can relieve pain and support the progress of labor. Students will deepen these intuitive skills through experiential exercises and by watching and analyzing the videos of many different types of births, practicing these support techniques with classmates, and teaching an expectant couple these techniques in a practice session. A visit to an area hospital birthing center is included in this weekend.

Stone Massage
Explore the earth element through the therapeutic application of stones. Learn advanced
techniques in thermotherapy utilizing hot and cold basalt stones, as well as basic gem stone
healing. Treatments include: chakra balancing; integrative stone placement and massage, cold
stone face massage, and full body hot and cold stone massage.

Comfort Touch®: Massage for the Elderly and the Ill
Comfort Touch® is a nurturing style of acupressure that gives special consideration to the
physical and emotional needs of the elderly and/or ill client. Its primary intention is to provide
comfort through techniques that promote deep relaxation and relief form pain. Participants
acquire skills in applying the principles and techniques of Comfort Touch® in a wide variety of
settings and circumstances, including hospices, home-care and long-term care facilities.
Emphasis is placed on efficient body patterning and self care for the caregiver. You will also
learn the basics of the Care Note method of narrative charting for use in medical settings.

Introduction to Thai Massage
Learn an array of techniques for supine, prone, side-lying and sitting positions and be able to combine the moves into a dynamic and fluid one-hour session. Thai massage is an ancient healing art with origins in Ayurvedic Medicine and yoga. It has evolved into a unique and magical combination of gentle rocking, deep stretching, rhythmic compression, sort-tissue manipulation, energy balancing, and acupressure. Required Materials: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. Have a light meal before class and allow time for digestion, keeping in mind that many Thai massage techniques involve compression of the abdominal area. In keeping with Thai tradition, please make sure that your feet are clean.

Polarity Therapy
Polarity therapy is the art of healing based on the principles of energy in motion and how our life is governed by these principles. Polarity unites bodywork, diet, exercise, self-awareness, and love into a fully integrated system of health. This course introduces an energy model of the human body based on the chakra system. From this basis, a full-body energy balancing treatment is taught, along with simple exercises, which deepen our sensitivity to subtle energy. Anyone interested in the relationship of energy to healing with the hands will find value in this course.

The Psychology and Ethics of Touch
From birth to death, touch or its absence, sets the course for our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. This course will explore the role of touch and massage in this process. Subjects covered include: burnout, transference and counter-transference, attachment issues of clients who are touch deficient (and those who aren’t), maintaining personal and professional boundaries, and the role of intimacy in the therapeutic process.

Seated Chair Massage
This creative and fun elective will instruct you in the skills and techniques of seated massage, utilizing a professional massage chair and a standard chair. You will learn to incorporate acupressure techniques (shiatsu) in a seated kata and experience various creative techniques for an effective seated session. A seated massage is a wonderful way to introduce people to the art of skilled touch and is a dynamic marketing tool in building one’s practice or gaining an employment opportunity.
