social responsibility

We are dedicated to enhancing the health and well being of the local and global community through the civic engagement of our staff, faculty and students. In 2008, we launched Massage for Peace, a fundraising initiative to support our service-learning program as well as other community service efforts throughout the world and our mission as a nonprofit organization.

Giving Back Locally
Each year, BCMT students provide thousands of therapeutic touch services to individuals and organizations that serve the elderly, hospice and AIDS patients, breast cancer survivors, chronic disease sufferers, healthcare workers, rehabilitating animals, teachers, firefighters and veterans. There are over 4500 individuals helped each year as a result of BCMT’s service learning curriculum.

At Boulder Community Hospital alone, students contribute yearly on average 250 hours of therapeutic massage to patients in prenatal, postpartum, cancer, cardiac, and orthopedic care. In today’s marketplace ($1 per minute for massage), that’s worth $15,000 a year. At 33 years, 10,000 hours a year at $60 an hour, that’s an eight-figure donation.

Giving Back Globally
In 2009, members of the BCMT community took our mission global, participating in our first study-abroad program in Tulum Mexico, and international massage therapy training in Dharamsala, India. In March of 2009, eight students spent their spring break in Tulum providing complimentary massage therapy to members of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve community. During this trip 80 hours of complimentary massage therapy services were provided.

Later that same year, ten members of BCMT faculty, staff and alumni community raised over $13,000, travelled to Dharamsala, India and provided massage therapy training at Lha Charitable Trust. As a result 20 Tibetan refugees were trained in Zen Shiatsu bodywork, Swedish Therapeutic Massage, and chair massage over six days.

At BCMT, we believe it takes a college of massage therapists to create a world of peace. It’s a powerful statement, an inspiring vision, and a call to action that we have taken up time and time again throughout our 35-year history.
