2011 Press Releases

Boulder College of Massage Therapy Announced completing over 1100 free massages to the athletes participating in the annual Bolder Boulder 10K running event.

BOULDER, COLORADO, May 31, 2011. Boulder College of Massage Therapy (BCMT) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its 23rd year of partnership with the BolderBoulder annual 10K running event in Boulder Colorado, held on Memorial Day, May 30th, 2011. This year BCMT donated therapeutic massages to over 1100 athletes following the 10K running event. Using 62 students, alumni, and faculty, therapeutic massages were given to the tired and stressed participants. To see 62 massage tables lined in four rows and therapists performing various massage techniques on the athletes was both heartwarming and exciting. It is widely known that orthopedic sports massage after an event like this is helpful in alleviating pain and soreness and it prevents muscle cramping and relieves stress. The Boulder College of Massage Therapy has a 35-year tradition of community service contributing over 6,000 hours a year in support of war-trauma veterans, pre-schoolers, athletes, musicians and students from the CU school of dance. At Boulder Community Hospital, students contribute 250 hours annually toward therapeutic massage for patients in prenatal, postpartum, cancer, cardiac, and orthopedic care. BCMT has been nationally recognized for its community work. As we honored our war heroes on Memorial Day, BCMT noted its new program reaching out to support war veterans suffering from post traumatic stress here in Boulder. After two years offering free massage therapy to these veterans at the Boulder Veteran’s Center, both the massage therapists and the veterans have seen transformational benefits. Aspen Sullivan, BCMT’S community service and internship manager, says it very well. “Before our massage therapy treatment program began, veterans experienced high levels of stress that impaired their ability to function normally in their lives. Initially they would lie face up on the table with their eyes open and have great difficulty with any level of relaxation. Following several massage treatments, they have been able to relax often to the point of falling asleep during the session.” One cumulative outcome of these sessions is many of the veterans are now able to talk more freely and discuss the issues that have troubled them.
