Infant Massage
Recent research confirms that skillful, nurturing touch can have profound effects on infants and their caregivers. This introductory course is based on the work of Vimala Schneider McClure and the International Association of Infant Massage. Students learn specialized infant massage techniques that are appropriate for full-term, healthy infants, so that students are able to teach parents how to massage their infants.

Students will learn about the history of touch with infants and the importance of touch for infants and their development. In addition to discussions of the benefits of infant massage, bonding, and infant communication, students will learn specific infant massage techniques and will explore effective ways to interact with parents while teaching them infant massage.
While learning the infant massage techniques, students will practice with dolls and stuffed animals. Parents and their infants will join the class each day at 1:00 pm for actual hands-on practice and instruction, at which time clinic attire is required for all students. Students will be teaching the parents how to massage their infants, while the students demonstrate on their dolls and stuffed animals.

Due to the fact that infant models are used in this class, enrollment will be restricted as of one week prior to start date based on model availability. Please plan ahead.

Prerequisite: Completion of 1st quarter (Available spring, summer and fall quarters)
Required Materials: Infant Massage: A Handbook for Loving Parents, Vimala Schneider-McClure; a baby doll or stuffed animal with arms and legs (bring to class); clinic attire for afternoon practice sessions with families
